Selected rate: Kenya VAT 16% · Checked 2026-09-15 · official source
KRA's general rate is 16%; some supplies are zero-rated or exempt, so this rate does not apply to every transaction. This is an estimate, not tax advice. Your transaction may be zero-rated or exempt, and IP location does not determine tax liability.

How Kenya VAT is calculated

For a standard taxable supply, add 16% VAT to the amount before VAT. To estimate the VAT portion inside a VAT-inclusive total, divide the total by 1.16 to find the amount before VAT, then subtract it from the total.

Add VAT

Net amount × 1.16 = total including VAT

Remove VAT

Gross amount ÷ 1.16 = amount before VAT

Important Kenya VAT limitations

The Kenya Revenue Authority distinguishes the 16% general rate from zero-rated supplies and exempt supplies. This calculator does not determine whether your product or service belongs in one of those categories, whether you must register, or whether input VAT is deductible.

Use the result as a planning estimate and verify the applicable treatment with the Kenya Revenue Authority VAT guidance before issuing an invoice or filing a return.

Frequently asked questions

What VAT rate does this Kenya calculator use?

It starts with Kenya's general VAT rate of 16% as stated by the Kenya Revenue Authority. Some supplies are zero-rated or exempt, so the rate must be confirmed for the specific transaction.

How do I remove VAT from a VAT-inclusive price?

Divide the VAT-inclusive amount by 1.16 to estimate the amount before VAT. The VAT portion is the difference between the total and that amount.

Is this a tax filing or compliance tool?

No. It is an educational estimate for common add/remove VAT calculations. Confirm the treatment with KRA guidance or a qualified tax professional before filing or invoicing.
